About Dustin Swanson
I'm Dustin "Dusty" Swanson, a mechanical engineer, designer, and founder of Swanson's Bespoke Designs—a company built around the idea that fabrication takes many forms.
Who I Am
I'm a mechanical engineer based in Rapid City, South Dakota, specializing in 3D CAD modeling, product design, and innovative automation systems. My engineering career includes work with CP Manufacturing on recycling system design in California, alongside running my own company focused on custom fabrication, adaptive technology, and AI-powered solutions.
In 2015, a spinal cord injury changed my life and my approach to engineering. What could have been a setback became a catalyst for innovation. As a quadriplegic, I now design with a unique perspective on accessibility, independence, and the critical role technology plays in quality of life.
What I Do
My work spans multiple domains, all connected by a focus on practical problem-solving and creative engineering:
Engineering & 3D Design
- SolidWorks CAD modeling for product development, custom parts, and manufacturing
- Reverse engineering to recreate obsolete or discontinued components
- Custom wheelchair adaptations and mobility device modifications
- 3D-printable designs optimized for FDM and SLA production
- Product prototyping with design-for-manufacturing considerations
AI & Automation Systems
- Personal AI Assistant development integrating health, vehicle, financial, and IoT data
- Healthcare data integration using FHIR protocols and OAuth authentication
- Caregiver management systems for scheduling, time tracking, and payroll
- IoT sensor networks using Raspberry Pi for environmental monitoring
- Vehicle diagnostics and OBD-II data logging
Property & Infrastructure
- Off-grid system design including solar, battery storage, and backup power
- Water system planning for wells, pressure systems, and filtration
- Accessible grading and access for challenging terrain
- Sustainable design for Black Hills climate and conditions
Why I Care About Independence & Automation
Living with quadriplegia means every daily task requires planning, equipment, and often assistance. But engineering training teaches you to see constraints as design parameters, not limitations.
I've spent years building systems that maximize independence - from voice-controlled home automation to AI assistants that give me instant access to medical records, vehicle diagnostics, and caregiver schedules. These aren't academic projects; they're essential tools that determine quality of life.
This personal experience drives my professional work. Whether designing a wheelchair mount, an automation system, or a property access plan, I understand that good engineering isn't just about making things work - it's about making life better.
"Fabrication takes many forms. Technology should empower people to live smarter, safer, and more self-sufficient lives."
